Promoting a stronger ethical investment policy in the Christian Churches

Executive Committee Report
for 2000

Review of the Year

2000 has been a year when there have been significant advances in the area of Ethical Investment (pension fund requirements and Government backing for SRI - Socially Responsible Investment) CEIG have been able to take part in some of these initiatives and build a base for better networking in the future.

We have had two main meetings in the year. Our AGM on Ascension Day was a lively affair exploring some of the difficult lines that ethical investors have draw in selecting investments. As noted below our AGM event in 2001 is on 17th March 2001.

Prophets or Profits ? was the subject of our second Open meeting in London in November alongside the newly elected Anglican General Synod. Viscount Churchill and Hugh Wilcox outlined the progress made by the Anglican Ethical Investment Advisory Group in focussing on ethical issues in companies. A well attended meeting from a diverse group sparked discussions across the whole range of Ethical Investment. From this meeting arose a demand to have a debate on matters relating to the defence industry which we are planning for July in York. We hope to give more details at the AGM event.

CEIG assisted with the drafting of ‘A Capital Solution – Faith Finance and a concern for a living planet’
sponsored by the Alliance of Religions and Conservation and presented at the World Summit of Religions in Katmandu in November. The book is intended to stimulate discussion in faith communities about Ethical Investment. Considerable research had gone into the material especially on the theological basis of ethical investment in different faiths as well as examples of EI initiatives. Copies of the book can be obtained from the Secretary at £4 inc p&p.

The Roman Catholic Sub-group under the Chairmanship of Eaver McMahon and secretaryship of Darryll Candy had 2 meetings during the year. The Financial Secretaries’ Working Group on Ethical Investment has an expanded membership which is hoping to submit a revised a model ethical investment policy for dioceses to the Roman Catholic Bishops’ Conference.

Income was broadly similar to last year but with the end of the RITES project and the excess printing costs in 1999 overall expenditure was down. The Committee have allocated an initial £500 from the year’s income as part of the costs of launching our proposed Web-Site.

The Committee met three times in the year with attendance of 7 at each one. Those who served during the year were Paul Brett (Vice-Chair), Bernice Broggio, Darryll Candy, Alistair Hanton, Eaver McMahon Gavin Oldham, Patricia Raikes, and myself as Chair. Your committee are delighted to co-opt Steven Dunham (a newly elected St Albans General Synod member) who will help us with launching the Web site before the end of 2001.

2001 plans and prospects

Our Annual Meeting Event is on 17th March 2001 at St Paul’s Robert Adam Street W1 from 10am. The subject will be ‘Globalisation of the World Economy – Friend or Foe?’. We will focus not only on the overall concerns but also how Christian churches can be informed by their networks with other parts of the world especially in developing countries.
