Annual Meeting 13 th April 2005
‘Taking the environment seriously in investment decisions’
We were delighted to welcome the Bishop of London to our AGM seminar held at St. Mary-le-Bow Church in Cheapside. The seminar featured contributions from Graham Baxter, Vice-President, Corporate Responsibility at BP plc; Simon McRae, Corporate & Investment Policy Co-ordinator of Friends of the Earth; David Russell, Adviser, Responsible Investment from the Universities’ Superannuation Scheme; and Peter Webster, Executive Director, Ethical Investment Research Service (EIRIS). There followed a vigorous discussion which continued over a glass of wine for over an hour. The debate was a good opportunity to explore more of the themes in ‘Sharing God’s Planet’, the February 2005 General Synod report.

York Synod: Our fringe meeting at York gave us the opportunity to examine EIAG progress, in such areas as cost, which was the subject of their 2005 report, and transparency.

On behalf of the Executive Committee

Gavin Oldham

Chair
27th February 2006

At the November General Synod, we took part in the ‘Freshers’ Fair’ arranged to introduce new members of Synod to a wide range of activities. We were pleased to welcome a number of new members

We continue to explore the potential for a new Chair for CEIG, somewhat more independent from the C of E’s investing bodies (I am a Church Commissioner and a member of the Archbishops’ Council’s Finance Committee, and a member of EIAG). We would particularly appreciate more theological input to our deliberations. Please pass on any thoughts!

Our accounts for the year show an excess of payments over receipts of £950 due to advertising. The balance sheet shows net assets of £4,410 as cash deposits. We have 60 paying members and 77 web members (free).

The Committee met four times in the year. Those who served during the year were Stephen Dunham (Webmaster and Secretary), Jane Addison (Treasurer), David Allen, Alistair Hanton, Elizabeth Rendall and Gavin Oldham (Chair). There are 2 vacancies on the Executive Committee, and volunteers would be welcome!

“Jesus, our Light and Lord, who preached in terms financiers use and taught we should give to this world’s powers their due, you drove traders from your Father’s house and revealed how hard Heaven’s access is for those who prosper; give us eyes to see the human faces of worldly wealth and poverty, and make yours our management of their complexities so that those among us who buy and sell, labour and invest, may do so only in your just and loving name and always to your Father’s glory and the welfare of all.”

2006 plans and prospects
Our Annual Meeting Seminar is at 6 pm (for 6.30pm) on 27th March 2006 at St. Paul’s Church, Langham Place, London. The subject will be ‘Linking political, social and faith concerns to investment decisions’.

There will also be a fringe meeting at York over the July Synod, and a seminar in London on 17th October 2006 entitled ‘Dirty Oil Companies?’
