JUSTICE

"Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph."

Amos 5 verse 15

Justice is a clear theme in the Bible in both the Old and the New Testaments.
But how is it administered?

  • Between nations Christians see that Governments have God-given authority where they exercise responsibility and justice to their citizens. Read Romans 13 verse 1-7 for Paul’s justification. Nations have a right to defend themselves but waging war can only be the last resort – Just Warfare
  • Between individuals and communities Justice should be administered fairly and without partiality. However it should not be used indiscriminately to take away a person’s livelihood or birthright where that person has suffered economic hardship or misfortune.

In this respect the Bible has strong words for people who take advantage of others through indebtedness, and this Biblical theme led to the concept of Jubilee – Debt forgiveness for the poorest nations.
